The California Supreme Court has refused to hear a case seeking to keep an initiative that would ban gay marriage off the November ballot. The justices' decision not to take up the case means Proposition 8 will stay on the ballot barring further legal action. It also clears the way for the secretary of state to print voter information pamphlets on the issue.
The initiative seeks to amend California's constitution to ban same-sex nuptials in the state. It would overrule a May decision by the state Supreme Court legalizing gay marriage.

"Victory"? Good lord! In 20 years the overwhelming majority of Americans will look back on banning same-sex marriage as an absurdity ranking up there with anti-miscegenation laws. Why try to pass something that'll just get repealed next decade?
ReplyDeleteI don't understand why a state supreme court would allow a civil rights issue to be put on a ballot. This isn't something to be put to voters' decisions. If same-sex marriage is made illegal by voters' decision, then will LBGT people have their tax rates reduced? Will LBGT people have their rent, mortgage, monthly living expenses reduced, since they won't have equality? Probably not. Family values... hmmm... are those the same ones that have such a high incidence of divorce, child neglect and abandonment, sexual abuse (Priests)? What a sad time. Will the white supremisicts be allowed to have a ballot issue making inter-racial marriage become null and void? It would probably pass in OC and San Diego. Bigotry is allowed in California. Disgusting.
ReplyDeleteI am also curious as to why anyone would consider this a "victory". The rampant homophobia is disgusting. As a married man I find it appalling that other citizens of this country have their ability to legally marry the person they want taken away. Gay marriage would never weaken the bond I have with my wife, and it is the straights who treat marriage like dating that give marriage a terrible reputation. You should try banning divorce if you want to "save" marriage. I agree that in a few short years this ban will be looked at as foolish as the ban on interracial marriages, which were opposed by the same conservative, religious freaks that oppose gay marriage.
ReplyDeleteSame sex marriage is a moral issue, not a civil issue. Marriage is ordained of God. I know this to be true. He created Adam and Eve, commanded them to multiply and replenish the earth. They had children. Children in turn have a right, yes a right, to be raised by a mother and a father. If anything, think of the impact a same-sex marriage will have on the children.

ReplyDeletePlease enlighten us on how denying marriage equality prevents heterosexual couples from having or adopting and then raising children.
