Texas: Replacing Kay Bailey Hutchison

U.S. Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison announced Thursday that she won't seek re-election next year, prompting an immediate flurry of speculation about successors, early positioning by potential candidates and a decisive “no” from a prominent Democrat who once had his eye on the job.
“Sen. Hutchison has worked hard for Texas for many years,” former Houston Mayor Bill White wrote in an e-mail. “I wish her and her family well. I look forward to going back into business this year, and will not run for the U.S. Senate in 2012.”

Kay Bailey Hutchison Won't Run for Re-Election

Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-Texas) announced Thursday that she will not run for re-election in 2012, making official a decision that many predicted was forthcoming.

According to the Dallas Morning News, Hutchison said in a letter to supporters that she is making her announcement now to allow Republicans sufficient time to campaign for a seat that is expected to be hotly contested. The winner of the March 2012 Republican primary will likely be the favorite to win that year’s general election.

Republican Gov. Rick Perry leads his Democratic challenger, Bill White by 10 points — 50 percent to 40 percent — in the latest University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll, which was conducted in the days leading up to early voting. Libertarian Kathie Glass has the support of 8 percent of respondents; Deb Shafto of the Green Party gets 2 percent.
In the last UT/TT poll, conducted in early September, Perry led by 6 points, 39 percent to 33 percent. That poll also found 22 percent undecided; in this poll, undecided voters were pressed to say which candidate they would choose if the election were held today.

Texas: Francisco Canseco Opens Up 6 pt Lead Over Ciro Rodriquez

An internal poll of 400 likely voters in the congressional district, conducted by Washington, D.C.-based On Message Inc., found Canseco favored by 45.3 percent of those surveyed, compared to 39.3 percent for Rodriguez.
The poll — conducted Oct.19-20, with the results released Thursday — showed other candidates with 9.6 percent of the vote and 6 percent undecided. The margin of error was plus or minus 4.1 percentage points.

Dallas: White Losing to Both Perry & Hutchison

But White believes he can overtake a GOP rival, and says some Republicans will help him do it. KERA's Shelley Kofler reports.

This week's Rasmussen poll shows Perry holding a 10-point lead over Hutchison.

But when pollsters asked likely Texas voters to choose between Republican frontrunners and Democratic contender Bill White, they found Perry more vulnerable. Perry leads White by 10 points. Hutchison leads White by 15 points.

Is the GOP Base More Motivated Than the Liberal Base?

Everyone had assumed a massive tidal wave of left-wing Obama fanatics would give him an insurmountable lead in the early voting.
That didn't happen.
People are still assuming Obama will have a larger turnout than McCain/Palin...just not as much as they thought. I still think it is likely that the turnout will be about equal, perhaps Dems +2, in which case Obama probably loses.

And if the GOP base is fired up and showing up in places like Texas and South Carolina, is there some reason it wouldn't show up in Indiana, North Carolina or Virginia? I suppose it's possible, but I wouldn't bet on it.

World Court... Don't make me laugh. Just how pretentious is that?

Texas is refusing to bow to yesterday's World Court order to stay the Aug. 5 lethal injection of convicted rapist-killer and illegal alien Jose Medellin.

The highest U.N. court insisted that five scheduled executions of Mexicans be immediately halted until the cases undergo further review. Mexico's government filed a petition with the court last month because it said the men had been deprived of assistance from their consulates following their arrests.
