Pennsylvania: Murtha's Widow Won't Run

The race among Democrats to fill Pennsylvania's Rep. John Murtha's seat often seems like a competition over who would most resemble the 18-term Johnstown powerbroker once in office.
On Monday, the person who would most embody that sentiment, his widow, Joyce, said she is not going to run for the seat -- opening the Democratic field for more than a half-dozen candidates. The Murtha for Congress Committee said in a statement that Mrs. Murtha "feels that it is too soon after his death to be on the campaign trail."

Tennessee: Bredeson's Press Secretary Denying Rumored Switch to GOP

Poll: GOP Making Striking Gains Against Dems

A new Washington Post/ABC News poll is signaling that the Republican Party’s resurgence is gaining strength as a growing number of Americans seem to think conservatives may be better at managing the economy than President Barack Obama and the Democrats.

The poll of 1,004 adults nationwide shows Republicans have narrowed the gap with the Democrats when it comes to who voters trust more to deal with the country’s problems. This shift erodes one of what had been Obama’s major political advantages.

The survey of 600 fifth Congressional district voters found [John] Spratt, who until now has been considered an untouchable Democrat, had only a seven point lead on State Sen. Mick Mulvaney.
“John Spratt is going to have to fight for reelection but he’s in better shape than a lot of southern Democrats in conservative districts,” said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Most of his constituents still see him as a centrist, even as they see his Congressional Democratic brethren as too liberal.”

Scott Brown's Win Helped by Union Member Revolt

Republican Scott Brown's victory in the Massachusetts Senate race was lifted by strong support from union households, in a sign of trouble for President Barack Obama and Democrats who are counting on union support in the 2010 midterm elections.
A poll conducted on behalf of the AFL-CIO found that 49% of Massachusetts union households supported Mr. Brown in Tuesday's voting, while 46% supported Democrat Martha Coakley. The poll conducted by Hart Research Associates surveyed 810 voters.
The finding, disclosed during an AFL-CIO conference call about the poll, represents a fresh problem for Democrats, who count on union leaders and union members as a pillar of the party's base.

Fourteen months ago, there was a buzz on Blue Hill Ave. and the streets that run off it like caterpillar legs. This is the heart of the biggest minority community in the state, and the energy generated by the prospect of Barack Obama becoming president was palpable.

Yesterday, I drove the length of Blue Hill Ave. and counted exactly two Martha Coakley signs. One of them was on a fence next to the Roxbury Energy Gas station, on the corner of Moreland Street. The sign wasn’t properly fastened. It flapped in the wind, revealing a “Mike Flaherty for Mayor’’ sign underneath.
