Virginia: McDonnell 54, Deeds 42

For Governor, Republican Bob McDonnell appears undamaged and today defeats Democrat Creigh Deeds. Compared to an identical SurveyUSA poll released five weeks ago, the race has tightened slightly, not dramatically. There is movement to Deeds in the Washington DC suburbs, where a 15-point McDonnell lead has evaporated, but there is no GOP erosion in the rest of the state.

Has Bob McDonnell, the Republican nominee for governor of Virginia in the Nov. 3 election, suffered much political damage over some controversial social policy views he expressed in a graduate thesis 20 years ago?

A Rasmussen Reports survey conducted Sept. 1, two days after McDonnell's thesis was first reported by The Washington Post, suggests that he has not, at least for now.

Desperate Democrats Still Attacking Bush

Is that all they have to use as ammunition? I guess so:

Convinced that Americans still hold Bush responsible for the nation's economic woes -- and will show more patience with Democratic policies if reminded of their dissatisfaction with the eight years of his presidency -- Democratic candidates have stepped up efforts to link GOP opponents to Bush, repeating a strategy that helped them take over Congress, the White House and a number of state offices in the past two election cycles.

In Virginia, Democratic gubernatorial candidate R. Creigh Deeds has pounced on statements by Republican Robert F. McDonnell indicating that Bush's tax cuts were good for the economy in the years after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The Bush name has littered Deeds's statements in the past week.
