Chris Christie Allows New Jerseyans to Hold Their Heads High

MTV's hit show "Jersey Shore," featuring Mike Sorrentino, the guido extraordinaire nicknamed for his impressive abs (they're a "Situation," apparently).

Recently, though, I've been holding my head high, thanks to Jersey's new governor, Republican Chris Christie, a man who hasn't seen his abs since the "Born to Run" tour -- if ever. In the 2009 race, our last governor, Jon Corzine, ridiculed Christie's weight, then left him with the gruesome political challenge of closing an $11 billion deficit, the largest gap per taxpayer in the United States.

"But that message has gotten lost. A few minor skeletons tumbled out of his closet — a poor driving record, an undisclosed loan to a co-worker. But the overriding negative perception of Christie is also entirely unfair, that he's a would-be tax cutter without a plan. Blame a poorly constructed campaign for that, not Christie.

"Fact is, Christie has offered many specific ideas on how to cut government spending, mirroring much of Gannett New Jersey's own 20-point plan to ease New Jersey's tax crush. Pension reforms, requirements for public employees to contribute more toward their benefits, a two-thirds legislative supermajority for all tax increases — they've all been proposed by Christie, along with many other initiatives."

New Jersey: Corzine's Negative Ad Blitz Shrinks Christie Lead

Jon Corzine has spent over 3 times the amount of money as Christie, mostly on attack advertising. Also, third party candidate Chris Daggett seems to be siphoning off more votes from Christie than Corzine.

I don't know if I should get too excited about this yet. Jon Corzine is a Goldman-Sachs guy, so even if the people don't want to reelect him, maybe they will be made to reelect him.

Strategic Vision has released a poll of the political situation in New Jersey. The results are not good news for Governor Jon Corzine and Barack Obama:

New Jersey: Christie Increases Lead Over Corzine to 12 pts

The Quinnipiac University Poll out Tuesday has GOP candidate Chris Christie leading the incumbent Corzine by 53 percent to 41 percent among likely voters.

A June 10 Quinnipiac poll had Christie up by 10 points, 50-40 percent. The most recent polling was done after Corzine signed a $29 billion budget that increased taxes and trimmed tax rebates.

New Jersey: Corzine Law Punishes Tiny Town for Saving Money by Doubling its Property Taxes

Loch Arbour, which this past year had 24 students in the township schools, had based its school tax bill on 110 percent of Ocean Township's cost per pupil or a minimum of $300,000 a year. That $300,000 became the going rate the past decade because the village did not have enough students to push the amount higher. Now, under the change in state law, the village's school taxes must once again be based on the assessed valuation of taxpayers' homes. That means the total tax amount will go up from $300,000 per year to $1,641,700 paid by approximately 150 individuals or families.

According to Rasmussen Reports, Chris Christie has increased his lead over Jon Corzine to 13 points, 51 to 38 percent.

Corzine Using Jon Bon Jovi to Court the Mediocre Vote

Tax-crazy governor Jon Corzine is dangling neutered 80s rocker Jon Bon Jovi as a reward for people who raise money for Corzine’s reelection campaign. Of course most people who join this contest will lose, but that's okay because Corzine will collect their money too.

Survey USA has the Republicans ahead in Virginia while Quinnipiac, Monmouth University and Strategic Vision have Christopher Christie leading Corzine. To sweep these two races would be a nice momentum builder for 2010.
